Acid attack raises concern for Chinese tourist arrivals to Hawaii
Hawaii tourism may face a possible downturn in tourist arrivals from China.
It comes after an acid attack left a 25-year-old Chinese woman in hospital and facing permanent disfigurement.
Honolulu Police have charged Sebastian Mahkwan with attempted murder and assault charges.
It happened at the Ala Moana Center.
The victim was named as Danying Zhang by the US-China Peoples Friendship Association.
She is an international exchange student teaching Mandarin at a local school.
It seems to be a random attack.
“Her throat and lungs were damaged from the acid fumes. Her skin on her body was severely damaged by the strong acid,” doctors said.
It could dent tourist arrivals from China as attacks, safety issues and crime against Chinese tourists are taken extremely seriously.
Thailand saw a downturn after a Chinese woman was one of the victims of a mass shooting in a Bangkok shopping mall in 2023.
In this incident the shooter was just 14 years old.
In 2018 two boats sank in rough seas near Phuket killing 47 Chinese tourists.
This also affected tourist numbers .
