‘Hairspray’ takes to the high seas
The hit musical ‘Hairspray’ is to debut on Royal Caribbean International’s biggest ship Oasis of the Seas.
The show will be one of two productions to be held in the vast vessel’s main theatre when it enters service from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December.
Hairspray is licensed to Royal Caribbean International for three years on board 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas with an option for a fourth year.
The show will be offered three or four times on each seven-night cruise.
It will be trimmed “just slightly” to fit within the average 90-minute run time of shows run on cruise ships.
Hairspray, currently playing in London’s West End, is set in 1962 and follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, who wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and finds herself transformed into an overnight teen sensation.
The cruise line has also promised an “innovative aerial show” – yet to be formally announced – which will also be performed in the ship’s Opal Theater.
The ship will also feature Entertainment Place, one of seven on board neighbourhoods, which will offer Jazz on 4, an intimate lounge filled with live jazz and blues; Comedy Live; and Studio B with an ice show called ‘Frozen in Time’ featuring the writings of Hans Christian Anderson.
A two-floor dance lounge called Dazzles will feature musically-themed evenings.
The Boardwalk with AquaTheater will play host to two aqua shows, ‘Splish Splash,’ a comedy dive show and ‘Oasis of Dreams,’ featuring aquatic acrobatics synchronized to music and lights.
