After Canada shootings, Airbnb cracks down on young adult guests

Tuesday, 06 Feb, 2020 0

After two deadly recent shootings in vacation rentals in Canada, Airbnb is cracking down.

It is launching a pilot program banning young people under 25 from booking entire Airbnb homes locally.

It will not affect travelers of all ages and guests with a track record of positive reviews on Airbnb.

The company says it will use additional security measures to verify guests.

It has already banned the use of Airbnb rentals as party houses after a California shooting last year.

Three young people were killed in a shooting at a Toronto Airbnb last week.

It follows another incident at an Ottawa Airbnb which saw one person shot and killed and others injured.

Airbnb is also establishing a 24/7 neighbor hotline in Canada manned by ‘rapid response agents’ to deal with issues.

"Nothing we’re going to say or do will bring back those lives, but we’re certainly going to talk about what we should do from a responsibility perspective," said Chris Lehane, SVP of global policy and communications.

"The issue of gun violence goes well beyond this particular action that we are identifying and taking. But we do think it is a step in the right direction."

Airbnb also said it will donate $300,000 to Canadian Doctors for Protection from Guns.

The new restrictions are limited to Canada at the moment but could be expanded if it proves effective.
