Agency staff make sustainable holiday pledge
Thousands of Co-op Travel and Travelcare staff are being asked to pledge support for sustainable charity the Travel Foundation.
More than 6,000 employees who work for the Co-operative Travel Trading Group societies are to sign a pledge card outlining a six-point action plan for their next overseas holiday.
By taking the sustainable tourism pledge, staff will promise to:
*Use water sparingly
*Avoid environmentally damaging souvenirs
*Shun holiday activities which involved cruelty to animals
*Greet people in their own language
*Turn off air conditioning when not required
*Support local businesses and producers.
More than 600 Co-op Travel and Travelcare outlets across the UK are carrying a Travel Foundation information leaflet, Insider Guide – Make a Difference When You Travel, providing tips for holidaymakers on how they can help protect holiday destinations.
CTTG head Mike Greenacre said: “We can’t expect holidaymakers to take these issues seriously unless the people that sell them the holidays do.
“Sustainable tourism is an important issue for anyone who loves travelling. It is estimated that there are nearly 800 million holidays taken across the world each year. The combined impact of this in holiday destinations is huge and potentially damaging.”
Travel Foundation director Sue Hurdle added: “Tourism brings many benefits to parts of the world desperately in need of money and jobs. But it does have its downside in terms of impact on culture and environment.
“We’re keen to encourage travellers to be more aware of how they can make a positive difference to the lives of the people and places they visit.
“This process starts when people visit their travel agents and it will be great to see Co-op staff leading by example.”
