Air Canada denies liability in gold bullion heist
Air Canada has hit back at claims it is liable for a multi-million dollar gold heist.
Security firm Brinks filed a lawsuit alleging the airline was negligent.
Earlier this year $23.8 million in gold and cash were stolen at a cargo facility at Toronto Pearson Airport.
The thief allegedly presented a fake ID and documents at an Air Canada cargo facility.
The airline issued a statement of defense in response to the lawsuit.
Air Canada rejected ‘each and every allegation.’
“Brink’s Switzerland Ltd. elected not to declare a value for carriage and to pay the standard rate for the AC Secure services product.”
“To Air Canada’s knowledge, it elected not to insure these shipments,” the airline said.
The lawsuit claims the thief presented a ‘fraudulent’ waybill after an Air Canada flight landed from Zurich.
Airport staff handed over 400 kg in gold and nearly $2 million in cash.
Air Canada failed to follow ‘appropriate security measures’ the lawsuit stated.
Police are still investigating with no arrests yet and the shipment is still missing.
