Airlines ‘misleading’ ads banned
Three airlines have been taken to task by the Advertising Standards Authority for ‘misleading’ online ads about their environmental credentials.
Adverts for Air France, Lufthansa and Etihad have been banned by the ASA.
The ads appeared online in July with Air France stating it is ‘committed to protecting the environment’ and urged customers to ‘travel better and sustainably.’
Lufthansa suggested customers would ‘fly more sustainably’ and Etihad’s ad says it includes ‘environmental advocacy.’
All three were investigated by the ASA.
Air France did not provide a ‘substantive response’ the ASA said.
Lufthansa agreed to remove the ‘Fly more sustainably’ text from future ads.
Etihad removed all references to ‘environmental advocacy” when it received the ASA complaint.
The advertising watchdog said: “We concluded that the claims gave consumers a misleading impression of the impact that travelling with Air France would have on the environment.”
It said Lufthansa’s Green Fares option ‘might decrease some of the negative environmental impact of flying’ but ‘we considered that the basis for the claim ‘Fly more sustainably’ had not been made clear in the ad.’
The German flag carrier and Etihad previously had ads banned earlier this year.
The ASA welcomed Etihad’s decision to remove the ad.
“Sustainability is a key priority for Etihad, which runs a comprehensive programme to address aviation decarbonization,” Etihad said.
