Airlines should be hit with hefty fines for the days of air travel chaos at airports, consumer group Which? Travel says

It again called for regulator the Civil Aviation Authority to be given powers to take action.

“Lessons should be learnt from the travel shambles this Easter,” Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel said.

“With many in the industry predicting a busy summer, the government must work with airlines and airports to ensure they have the resources.”

“There can be no excuse for a repeat of these failings.”

“Airlines wouldn’t be ignoring the law and their passengers’ rights if the aviation regulator had some teeth.”

“The Department for Transport can support consumers by equipping the Civil Aviation Authority with direct fining powers.”

Boland also called on the government to drop plans to reduce compensation rules for UK flights, which acts as ‘an important deterrent against passengers being treated unfairly.’

The proposals do include possible additional powers for the CAA.

As well as further disruption at airports, Britain’s road network could be heavily congested this Easter.

The RAC predicts more than 21 million journeys by car this weekend.
