American Airlines is finally joining the party and revamping the way it calculates frequent flyer rewards.
The AAdvantage program will now reward flyers on dollars spent rather than the traditional way of allocating miles per flight.
It follows moves made by rivals Delta and United Airlines, which rewards the highest paying customers most.
Starting August 1, 2016 AAdvantage members will earn 5 miles per dollar spent, 7 miles for Gold status members and 8 for Platinum members.
Elite Executive Platinum flyers receive 11 miles per dollar spent.
American is also rolling out a new level called Platimum Pro which will sit between the Platinum and Executive Platinum levels, offering two free checked bags, complimentary upgrades on domestic flights and to Central America and 9 miles per dollar spent.
The Platinum Pro level becomes effective from January 1, 2017.
"American Airlines is evolving AAdvantage to continue our tradition of having the best loyalty program in the world by rewarding our most loyal customers with the benefits they value the most," said Andrew Nocella, American Airlines’ chief marketing officer.
American has long hinted these changes were on the way but held back while it completed its frequent flyer program integration with merger partner US Airways.
