American Airlines pilots want compensation for Max grounding

Thursday, 03 Oct, 2019 0

American Airlines pilots are demanding compensation for reduced pay due to the long term grounding the Boeing 737 Max.

The jets have sat idle since March and the effect on salaries has been ‘real and calculable’ says Allied Pilots Association president Captain Eric Ferguson.

The APA is seeking a pledge from the airline similar to one recently made by Southwest Airlines, the biggest Max customer in the US.

Southwest promised to share any compensation it receives from Boeing with its pilots.

"We’re looking for the same thing," Ferguson said.

He noted that although pilots have been reassigned to other aircraft, their overall flying hours have been reduced due to Max related cancelations.

The likely date when the Max will be cleared to return to the skies is still unclear although Boeing remains confident it will be before the year-end.

That confidence is not shared by Southwest Airlines’ pilot union which said this week it believes the grounding could linger until February or March next year.
