American killed by stray bullet in Mexican resort town

An American woman has been killed in Tulum, Mexico, apparently caught in the crossfire of a gun battle.

Niko Honarbakhsh from Los Angeles was hit by a stray bullet, the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office said.

An alleged drug dealer from Belize was also shot dead.

He was in possession of various narcotics and investigators believe it was probably a drug deal gone wrong or was targeted by a rival drugs gang.

Some local media reports said the American woman and the dead man were in a relationship but this has been dismissed by the prosecutor’s office.

They say Honarbakhsh died from a stray bullet.

Both the deceased are undergoing autopsies.

Investigators said they have identified suspects who are still at large.

This isn’t the first time tourists have been caught in the crossfire.

Another Californian and a German tourist were killed in Tulum in 2021 by stray bullets during a gun battle between rival gangs.

South of Cancun, Tulum is a popular destination for Americans.
