Amsterdam city officials has banned cruise ship traffic in the city, which will lead to the closure of the central cruise terminal.

It is another move to cut pollution and overcrowding in the city.

The city welcomes more than 100 cruise ships each year.

“Cruise ships in the centre don’t fit in with Amsterdam’s task of cutting the number of tourists,” said Ilana Rooderkerk of the D66 party.

The city has been pushing measures to crack down on overtourism and nuisance behaviour.

This involves cleaning up the Red Light district and deterring stag parties.

There has been no timeline given for the cruise terminal closure.

It wouldn’t see the end of shore excursions to Amsterdam.

Cruise lines also offer trips to Amsterdam when docking at IJMuiden and Rotterdam.

It comes as Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport seeks to limit the number of scheduled flights.
