ANA signs deal for sustainable aviation fuel supply

Sunday, 27 Oct, 2020 0

Japan’s largest airline has inked a purchase agreement for jet fuel made from renewable materials from Finland based Neste.

It agreed to purchase sustainable aviation fuel from Neste’s Singapore refinery.

It is taking small steps to begin with but plans to expand it from 2023 when Neste will have capacity to produce up to 1.5 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel a year.

The fuel derives from waste products and raw materials and can produce 80% fewer greenhouse gases, it says.

It will start using the sustainable fuel from this month for flights out of Tokyo’s two airports.

"We recognise the major role sustainable aviation fuel has to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions of aviation, both in the short and long term. Through this new collaboration, we are enabling the supply of SAF for the first time in Asia," said Thorsten Lange, Executive Vice President for Renewable Aviation at Neste.

ANA is initially buying 100,000 tons of the fuel.

"While Covid-19 has forced us to make adjustments, we remain committed to meeting our sustainability goals," said Yutaka Ito, Executive Vice President at ANA.

The airline has pledged to reduce carbon emissions by half by 2050 and Japan has set itself a goal of having net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the same year.
