ANA testing autonomous airport bus

Sunday, 02 Feb, 2021 0

All Nippon Airways (ANA) aims to be the first Japanese carrier to use a driverless bus at airports.

The airline has started advanced trials of a prototype autonomous bus at Tokyo Haneda Airport.

The project is a partnership between the airline, BYD Japan and Softbank’s BOLDLY Advanced Smart Mobility.

It is being trialled in restricted area of Haneda Airport and if a success could be implemented at airports by 2025.

It began testing the tech back in 2018.

"We are constantly looking for ways to harness the latest technology to enhance operations and efficiency," said Masaki Yokai, Senior Vice President of ANA.

Tests of the vehicle will continue daily until 12 February with up to 57 airline employees being transported.

ANA previously piloted a similar vehicle at Kyushu Saga Airport.

The eco-friendly buses are electrically powered.
