Asia cruise market continues to ride the wave

Thursday, 15 Aug, 2016 0
Asia’s cruise industry continues to outgrow every other cruise market with a record 24% increase in passenger numbers.

CLIA’s Asia Cruise Trends study showed 2.08 million passengers in 2015 with China accounting for almost half.

"The cruise industry has been nimble and responded quickly to the demand for cruise travel in Asia by delivering cruise ships with amenities and experiences tailored to Asian travellers," said CLIA president and CEO Cindy D’Aoust.

"Asian cruise travel has also become an enticing way for international guests to visit Asia’s fascinating destinations in a comfortable and convenient way.

Australia ranked second with 14.6% growth.

CLIA Australasia Managing Director Neil Linwood said: "The growing number of people in Asia discovering the joys of a cruise holiday, means more potential customers for cruise ships sailing in our waters.  It also opens the way for more ships, including newer and larger ships, to be deployed in Australia seasonally, complementing their Asian deployments."

Asia based and global cruise lines have met the demand for 2016 with added capacity on ocean cruise ships of 3.2 million this year.

According to the study, the most visited port in 2016 is projected to be Jeju Island, South Korea with 460 planned port calls, followed by by Shanghai (437) and 391 in Singapore.

"While we expected Asia to experience record-breaking growth in cruise travel, we are astonished at the rate at which the region is emerging as one of the most significant cruise destinations and cruise source markets in the world," said Dr.Zinan Liu, Chair of CLIA North Asia.

"The Asia Cruise Trends project has again developed extremely valuable data on what is happening in Asian cruising, its current size and recent growth trends".
