Aussie tourism industry to claim back overseas travel
Australians spend $5.5 billion a year on overseas trips and Tourism Australia wants to convince them to holiday in Australia rather than overseas.
Tourism Australia is trying to persuade the Aussie high spenders and frequent travellers to swap their overseas holidays for the luxury experiences inbound overseas travellers come here to experience.
Tourism Australia’s Director Australasia, Andrew McEvoy speaking at the Australian Tourism Exchange in Adelaide, said Tourism Australia was targeting the 20% of Australian travellers who spend 70% of the tourism dollar and by promoting three main styles of holiday in Australia could help keep some of their spend in Australia.
He said that of course some travellers wanted to “fly-and-flop” holiday to resorts enjoying high quality accommodation, but others were more adventurous wanting to visit wine regions and see some of Australia’s sights that they had not seen before.
He said that in recent years Australians have been travelling overseas more than ever before with tourism spending slipping from 12.5% of Australians’ total expenditure six years ago to below 10% and there were many factors for this including partly a shift to purchasing consumer goods, paying school fees and the casualisation of labour.
