BAA launches security awareness campaign
BAA is launching an awareness campaign over the busy Easter holiday period to ensure that passengers are aware of new security requirements.
Research recently carried out by BAA showed that 91% of those questioned believe airport procedures for security have changed and 81% claim to know the new hand luggage security restrictions. However, BAA says that every day it is still confiscating 1,000 to 2,000 sharp items, which are no longer permitted in hand luggage, in each terminal at its south east airports alone (Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted). This equates to around 15,000 sharp items daily and a total of over 2.5 million sharp items have been confiscated since September 11.
BAA hopes its security awareness campaign will help to minimise unnecessary queues at security control points. Over Easter, over 1.6 million people are expected to fly from BAA’s seven UK airports.
The security awareness campaign includes a ‘travel tips and security advice’ card which lists the sharp items which will be confiscated if packed in passengers’ hand luggage. The card is being widely distributed to passengers around the country at BAA airports, through airlines and to all ABTA members.
BAA has also recruited an additional 226 staff group-wide to help implement new requirements and minimise time spent at security control during the busy Easter and Summer holiday periods. Currently over a third of BAA’s staff are employed in security.
