Bahamas Celebration ship out of action for next two weeks

Celebration Cruise Line said it will cancel cruises for the Bahamas Celebration ship for the next two weeks following the evacuation of passengers after the ship hit an unknown object in the water.

The ship, bound for Port of Palm Beach, struck the object soon after leaving the Bahamas and ran aground at Freeport, forcing the evacuation of over 900 passengers.

The cruise line said the stranded passengers were transferred to the Bimini SuperFast cruise ship via Miami on Saturday before arriving at Port of Palm Beach early Sunday.

Celebration Cruise line said it will notify passengers with reservations on the cancelled cruises and will offer refunds or make other arrangements, which could include chartering another vessel, according to Manuel Almira, executive director of the Port of Palm Beach.

"No passengers were ever in any danger and everything was handled in an organized and efficient way by ship, corporate, and Bahamian personnel," Celebration Cruise Line said in a statement.

However passengers described a ‘nightmare’ scene aboard the ship.

"It was like an actual Halloween horror cruise turned into real life," passenger Daniel Fana told ABC News, adding that "people were hysterical."

"Everybody was screaming at each other, it was just a nightmare," said fellow passenger Joan Fischer.
