Big airport security shake-up coming in 2024

Airport security is set to see its biggest changes for many years in 2024.

CT scanning tech will improve security and the passenger experience at airports with streamlined screening.

The government is introducing new legislation which will make it easier to screen passengers without removing items such as laptops and liquids.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: “We’re streamlining cabin bag rules at airports while enhancing security.”

By 2024, major airports will have the latest CT X-ray airport security tech installed.

This allows security screeners to scan multi-dimensional images of a bag’s contents.

Airports have until mid-2024 to upgrade their screening equipment.

Currently  liquids are limited to 100ml and must be in a clear plastic bag.

This requirement will eventually be extended to two litres.

Christopher Snelling, Policy Director at The Airport Operators Association (AOA), said: “This investment will provide a great step forward for UK air travel.”

It follows successful trials at some airports since 2018.

Similar tech has been deployed in other countries such as the US.

The current liquids rules were introduced in 2006 after a terrorist threat.
