Call to restrict new hotel development in Cancun
Hotel development in Cancun has reached a tipping point with calls for a moratorium on new construction.
Federal tourism development agency Fonatur wants the local government to stop granting permits for new hotels as it is seriously affecting the water supply.
According to newspaper El Financiero, Fornatur chief Rogelio Jimenez Pons said that if there is no suspension on new permits, Fornatur will not provide funding for the resort city.
Cancun is one of eight tourist destinations which Fornatur is tasked with developing.
"We don’t want to frighten away investment but we don’t agree with overexploitation," Jimenez said.
Funds set aside for Cancun could go to other destinations, he said
The agency is trying to stop current projects including a $1 billion resort development of 3,000 rooms.
Cancun currently has about 37,000 hotel rooms and there are a further 6,000 in the pipeline within the city’s hotel zone.
