Carnival charting new waters

Carnival is looking to sail off to more ports of call in Alaska and Europe.

But the switch from its Caribbean markets, which represents half of Carnival’s business, won’t happen quickly, CEO Micky Arison told Reuters.

The Caribbean, which suffered during the last hurricane season, has been less profitable for Carnival with some weakening of demand.

“Hopefully, it is a short-term phenomenon, but I have no way of knowing that,” said Mr Arison.

The Caribbean still accounts for about half of Carnival’s business but that figure is projected to decline to 48% this year.

Travel agents continue to handle the vast majority of bookings and internet tickets are only a small part of Carnival’s business.

“The internet has become a resource of information. But for some reason…there hasn’t been a significant amount of internet bookings,” said Mr Arison.

Carnival, which operates the Holland America, Cunard and Princess brands, is the world’s largest cruise line.
