Carnival reroutes 12 ships from Red Sea

Wednesday, 31 Jan, 2024 0

Carnival Corp is shifting a dozen ships away from the Red Sea, as geopolitical conflict continues in the region.

The 13 ships are operated by seven Carnival brands that were scheduled to sail the Red Sea in May.

The decision comes after discussing the matter with government officials and security experts, it says.

“The company has not seen an impact on booking trends due to the Red Sea situation and has no other Red Sea transits until November 2024,” Carnival said.

“The losses should be offset by higher-than-expected bookings.”

However, it will likely affect its 2024 adjusted earnings, mostly felt in the second quarter.

Carnival Corp is ‘committed to the safety and well-being of its guests and crew,’ it said.

Carnival brand Costa Cruises has previously indicated it was canceling a repositioning voyage through the Red Sea this spring.

It affects Princess cruises’ World Cruise aboard Island Princess, which will ‘no longer visit the Middle East (including Dubai) or Asia,’ according to a statement.

Instead the ship will add calls in Australia and continue to South Africa and along the west coast of Africa en route to Europe.

Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have rerouted ships away from the conflict zone with the later even choosing to sail empty ships all the way around Africa.

Commercial shipping is being targeted by Houthis in Yemen

The respective Carnival Corp brands will directly contact booked customers impacted by the changes.
