CDC: Blocking middle seats reduces risk of Covid-19

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points to a reduced risk of Covid-19 exposure when middle seats are blocked on aircraft.

The research, which was compiled in cooperation with Kansas State University, found a 23% to 57% reduction in exposure to ‘viable’ virus particles.

"Physical distancing of airplane passengers, including through policies such as middle seat vacancy, could provide additional reductions in risk for exposure to SARS-CoV-2 on aircraft," it concluded.

The research has come a little late as airline have abandoned blocking seats as passenger traffic gradually ticks up. Only Delta Air Lines still blocks the middle seat but will end that policy at the end of April.
