Charity calls for travel industry support

Thursday, 26 Jun, 2006 0

Y Care International (YCI), the international development charity of the YMCA UK & Ireland, is calling for businesses in the travel industry to support its international programmes.

YCI was founded in 1984 by humanitarian and author Terry Waite CBE on a simple proposition: to use the YMCA’s global network and expertise to reach out to some of the world’s poorest, most vulnerable and marginalised young people.

The charity’s innovative grass-roots development projects, which are all implemented by local YMCAs, offer hope and new life to thousands of young people and their communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Y Care International is calling for businesses with international connections to get involved and give financial support to its work around the world.

Parts of the travel industry have shown their commitment to supporting sustainable community development in the developing world, and partnering with Y Care International would be an excellent way to help put this into practice.

Chief executive Chris Roles said: “Many companies take Corporate Social Responsibility very seriously and a partnership with Y Care International would help support a business’s CSR strategy.

“By supporting Y Care International, a business would be helping us help disadvantaged young people and their communities free themselves from poverty and build a better future.”

Y Care International’s relationship with its YMCA partners in the developing world sets it apart from many other international development charities:

• It does not spend funds running overseas offices or sending expatriate staff to work overseas, preferring to work with local YMCAs who are close to their communities and know the best ways to help.

• YMCA employees are part of the local communities they work in, and have the expertise, knowledge and understanding to deliver effective and sustainable development projects that local people really need.

• Because Y Care International’s partner YMCAs have an already strong base of skilled local people and volunteers, Y Care International’s administrative costs can be kept low to offer real value for donors’ money.
