China Airlines crash heightens air safety fears

Tuesday, 27 May, 2002 0

Air safety is once again in the spotlight after Saturday’s China Airlines crash which is believed to have killed all 225 people on board.

The Taiwanese carrier became known for its poor safety record after crashes in 1999, 1998 and 1991 but a new management team appointed in March 2000 appeared to have turned things round.

Flight CI 611 crashed into the sea on Saturday on its way from the Taiwanese capital of Taipei to Hong Kong. There were 206 passengers on board along with 19 crew.

The cause of the crash is still not known, but the plane’s two black box recorders are expected to be recovered early this week.
