China drops PCR test requirement

China is dropping the PCR test requirement for inbound travelers.

From April 29, foreign arrivals need only produce a negative rapid antigen test, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced this week.

It now removes arguably the biggest barrier to the China tourism recovery.

China began reopening to the world in January.

The country had already eased rules for nationals of certain countries like New Zealand.

Foreign arrivals are required to fill in a Health Declaration Form.

By keeping the PCR test requirement long after many other countries had dropped it, has meant a sluggish recovery for inbound tourism in China.

Air capacity to China is still only a tiny percentage of pre-pandemic traffic.

IATA predicts it will take at least another year for a full recovery.
