China hotel denies targeting US guests with price hike
A hotel in China has refuted claims it has an anti-American pricing policy, charging US guests more to stay, amid an intensifying trade war between the countries.
Media reported the Modern Classic Hotel Group Shenzhen had apparently displayed a notice informing US guests they would be charged an extra 25%.
That has since been removed and the hotel has denied the claim.
"We have no idea where this news came from. We treat all our guests equally. We wouldn’t charge one type of guest more than another type of guest," front office manager Bai Lulu told Reuters.
However Reuters citing hotel staff sources contradicting that.
News outlet The Global Times reported the hotel owner was ‘really angry about the endless tariffs the US planned to impose on China,’ according to another worker at the hotel.
‘Chinese public sentiment towards the US is becoming more sensitive,’ the newspaper added.
The United States and China each imposed tit-for-tat tariffs on a variety of goods worth a combined US$34 billion.
The rhetoric has also become more intense with China accusing the Trump administration of ‘bullying.’
