Construction begins on new Lombok cruise terminal

Indonesia’s state port authority PT Pelindo III has started work on a new cruise terminal in Lombok, east of neighbouring Bali.

It is hoped to usher in a cruise tourism boost for the region, which until now has been relatively stagnant as far as large cruise ship traffic is concerned.

Work on Gili Mas Terminal at Lembar Seaport is slated to be completed by 2019 at a cost of about US$90 million.

Cruise ships at the existing Lembar cruise facility have to tender offshore.

It will be able to handle a 4,000-capacity cruise liner or two smaller ships simultaneously.

It will also offer an alternative to Bali’s Benoa port.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony, Pelindo III CEO Ari Askhara said it will spur economic activity and complement the upcoming billion-dollar Mandalika integrated resort zone.

"The Gili Mas Terminal is an expansion of the Lembar Seaport and is intended to facilitate the increase of economic activity in West Nusa Tenggara. It will also function as another main gate for foreign tourists visiting the province," Ari said.
