Conventions becoming a family affair

Monday, 11 Nov, 2004 0

Convention-goers are increasingly likely to bring the family along.

“They want more of a work and play environment. A lot of meeting attendees will go to meetings for three or four days, and then spend a day or two extra with their families. It’s a great way to do a short-term add-on vacation.”, says the director of sales and marketing for the Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe Resort.

The hotel is popular in part because of its nearly ideal location sandwiched between a casino and the gondola that takes visitors year-round up the mountain to Heavenly, a well-known ski resort.

“We’re also within a two minute walk of dozens of restaurants and shops,” said Mr Cottrill.

Also popular is a full cooked-to-order complimentary breakfast and a two-hour, full-bar manager’s reception each evening.

About a third of the hotel’s bookings used to be business related but that’s increased to 40%, in part because of the growing popularity of Tahoe as a conference and meeting center, even though it does not have its own convention facility.

The Embassy Suites, with 10,000 square feet of convention space that can accommodate meetings of up to 500, is among local hotels that cater both to convention groups and to leisure travelers.

Value-conscious meeting planners can look to the months of April through June, and September and October, to get the best deals.
