Cruise passengers hit by virus
Passengers on a P&O Cruises ship have gone down with the contageous norovirus.
An unspecified number – thought to be around 50 – on the ship Oceana sailing in the Mediterraenean have been affected.
The vessel is carrying 2,015 passengers on a 17-night cruise which departed from Southampton on May 19.
A statement from P&O Cruises said: “There has been an increased incidence of a mild gastrointestinal illness amongst passengers on board the current sailing of Oceana.
“We have confirmed the illness is caused by Norovirus (formerly known as Norwalk Virus) which is the most common cause of gastroenteritis in the developed world. Only the common cold is reported more often. There are currently outbreaks throughout the UK.
“P&O Cruises works closely with local and international public health agencies and has developed and implemented its extensive sanitisation programme on board to interrupt the spread of illness.
“Passengers who are unwell are being treated at no cost and have been asked to comply with the ship’s doctor’s instructions. This includes a brief isolation in their cabin until they are non contagious.”
