Cruise ship calls to Noumea could be cancelled due to widespread unrest

Cruise ship port calls in Noumea, New Caledonia could be in jeopardy due to ongoing civil unrest in the French overseas territory in the South Pacific.

Carnival Cruise Line Australia is ‘closely monitoring the situation.’

“We are in contact with the relevant authorities both here and in New Caledonia,” the cruise line said.

“Should we need to make any changes to upcoming itineraries, we will notify guests and travel agents as soon as possible.”

The pollical unrest seems to have been sparked by an electoral reform bill, leading to rioting on the streets.

Businesses and vehicle were set on fire and five deaths have been reported.

Australian shuttered its embassy in Noumea, and issued a travel alert.

The airport has been closed and a curfew is in place.

Additionally, the government imposed a state of emergency which itself would likely impact cruise ship visits.

Two Carnival Australia brands are due to visit New Caledonia within the next week.

P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Adventure is scheduled to visit on May 20, followed by the Carnival Splendor two days later.
