Cruisers docking soon at small Michigan town?
Could Saugatuck, Michigan, join Rome, Athens and New York City as the next cruise ship stop?
Maybe not that popular but some Michigan news outlets are reporting that the small vessel (138-passenger) Yorktown will be visiting there. New York-based Travel Dynamics International operates the ship.
Saugatuck, a beach town of around 1,000 residents, in modern times has become best-known for being part of the “Art Coast of Michigan.” It’s rolling grassy dunes and white sand beaches have been ranked among tops in the world. It is also known for special events and dune rides.
Michigan news site mlive.com reports it'll be the first time a cruise ship has stopped in the town in nearly six years.
A European line sent a vessel to the city in the early part of the 2000s, the news outlet notes.
"It's wonderful once again to have a ship of this size visit our resort community," Saugatuck-Douglas Convention and Visitors Bureau director Felicia Fairchild told mlive.com, noting Great Lakes cruising dropped off with the economy in the past five years.
The new Great Lakes voyages will run between Detroit and Chicago, mlive.com says.
