Disney heiress slams theme park over pay that leaves workers scrounging for food
Disney heiress Abigail Disney has is calling on the empire’s CEO Bob Iger to do more to compensate workers she says are struggling to put food on the table.
Prompted by a worker who sent her a Facebook message, she went undercover to check out working conditions at Disneyland.
She told Yahoo in an interview she was ‘so livid’ at the pay discrepancy at ‘the Happiest Place on Earth.’
Employees she spoke to all gave her a similar message: "I don’t know how I can maintain this face of joy and warmth when I have to go home and forage for food in other people’s garbage," she said.
"Bob needs to understand that he is an employee just the same as the people scrubbing gum off the sidewalk are employees, and they’re entitled to the same dignity and human rights that he is," said added, referring to Iger’s Iger’s $66 million salary package.
She recently fired off an email to Iger with her concerns over the ‘insane’ pay gap but said she received no reply.
"You’re a great CEO by any measure, perhaps even the greatest CEO in the country right now," she wrote."You know, your legacy is that you’re a great manager. And if I were you, I would want to be known as the guy who led to a better place, because that is what you have the power to do."
Disney responded by detailing its commitment to employee development and wage structure, which meets minimum pay standards.
"Disney is at the forefront of providing workforce education, which is widely recognized as the best way to create economic opportunity for employees and empower upward mobility," it said.
"American workers deserve smart policies and practical programs, like Disney Aspire, that empower them to achieve their goals and ensure they are part of the most competitive workforce in the world."
