Domestic tourism portal opens
Tourism website provider Tiscover has launched in the UK offering booking capability for “hundreds” of domestic accommodation providers. The Tiscover.co.uk site offers information from tourist destinations and attractions, events, weather and the ability to make online bookings. Austrian-based destination system provider Tiscover unveiled the website at the British Travel Trade Fair in Birmingham. It has signed up the East of England Tourist Board – one of nine regional tourist boards – Bournemouth City Council and Plymouth Marketing Bureau. Tiscover powers the websites of organisations including the Austrian National Tourist Office, Bavaria in Germany and the Italian province of Trentino. Sales, marketing and finance executive director Karsten Karcher said: “Our intention is to become the leading operator of tourism websites in the UK, like we are in other countries. Tiscover.co.uk will provide the UK’s tourist market with a powerful platform to target their huge domestic and international customer base.” Mr Karcher told TravelMole that “a couple of hundred” hotels were available to book online but that numbers were increasing all the time. “We are in the process of recruiting hotels but it is still early days yet,” he said. Besides hotels, Tiscover is targeting bed and breakfasts and other small to medium sized accommodation providers through industry associations and organisations. “We ultimately want a solution that covers the whole of the UK. We are doing bit by bit, like completing a jigsaw puzzle,” explained Mr Karcher. He revealed that Tiscover planned to introduce a freephone reservations number to the UK within the next three months, linked to a call-centre in Vienna staffed by 400 multi-lingual agents. The company already offers the freephone service in other parts of the world. Tiscover’s launch came as VisitBritain started a City Culture marketing push at BTTF highlighting 30 “vibrant” cities in England. It wants more people to take domestic city breaks, a market estimated to be worth £3.8 billion. VisitBritain claimed that 24 million people visit English cities every year. Report by Phil Davies
