Hong Kong based Dragonair has been given a rebrand and a new name.
It will now be known as Cathay Dragon in a move to improve brand awareness in the international market as the sister airline to Cathay Pacific.
Dragonair has been part of the Cathay Pacific Group for a decade.
At a media briefing Cathay Pacific chief executive Ivan Chu said it is not a merger and the two carriers will continue to operate as separate entities.
"Cathay Dragon is a brand that will be recognisably part of the Cathay Pacific Group for our customers from different parts of the world. The rebranding will enable us to capture the fast-growing passenger flows across the two carriers by creating a more seamless travel experience," said Chu.
"This rebranding will sharpen our competitive edge by offering an attractive Cathay-led brand package that carries the assurance of a consistently high-quality customer experience."
New livery created for Cathay Dragon mimics the Cathay Pacific ‘brushwing’ logo but it will keep its red colour scheme.
It will begin appearing on planes from April and extended gradually to the entire fleet.
The Cathay Pacific Group plans a global marketing campaign later this year to promote brand recognition of Cathay Dragon and the customer benefits of closer alignment with Cathay Pacific.
"We can assure our customers that Cathay Dragon will continue to provide the same high level of products and services that made us a four-time winner of the World’s Best Regional Airline award," said Cathay Dragon CEO Algernon Yau.
