EasyJet apologises for pilot’s threat to remove passenger for mask violation
EasyJet has apologised to a passenger with asthma after the pilot threatened to remove him from a flight from Jersey for refusing to wear a face mask.
The pilot told ‘Nick’ that the exemption card he’d printed off a government website wasn’t valid.
However, the government website clearly states that passengers who have health reasons for not wearing a face covering should not be routinely asked to give any evidence of this.
It says: "No person needs to seek advice or request a letter from a medical professional about their reason for not wearing a face covering.
"Some people may feel more comfortable showing something that says they do not have to wear a face covering. This could be in the form of an exemption card, badge or even a home-made sign.
"This is a personal choice and is not necessary in law."
In a statement to the BBC, easyJet said: "We have recently updated our policies in line with recent UK government guidance so that as well as a medical certificate, customers can alternatively provide a relevant document from a government website or lanyard.
"We are sorry that this new policy was not recognised by the crew on this occasion."
