The objects of the co-operation are to raise funds raise funds for Medecins Sans Frontieres, assist in reducing the devastation caused by Ebola in West Africa. And provide information about tourism to the affected areas and the rest of Africa.
The subject will be discussed at a press conference at WTM on Wednesday at 12.30 Details HERE
Said one of the organizers Thomas Armitt of West Africa Discovery "Along with some other tourism professionals, we have managed to convince major tour operators, tourism associations and agencies to unite and start a campaign to support Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. We have called it "Unite 4 West Africa". The URL will be http://www.unite4westafrica.org . We will have a fundraising page, website and newsletter ready to be launched mid-week next week."
"Raising funds for both MSF and a grass roots organisation in all 3 of the affected countries. For transparency and accountability we are choosing to send funds to International NGOs that support Grass roots organisations in each of the destinations so that they can distribute the funds efficiently and in a focused manner where there is most need of it at the time. We are hoping to send funds on a monthly basis for a non-specific time. Grass roots organisations that we are targeting will fall under the following categories to start off:
- Food Security
- Orphaned child support
The campaign is also intended to get the Ebola epidemic into perspective. By informing the travel, ex pat and diaspora communities that though Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are obviously affected quite significantly there is no reason not to visit other countries in West Africa and certainly no reason not to visit other Africa countries like Ethiopia, Uganda, S Africa.
A newsletter will be circulated shortly DETAILS HERE
