Emirates eyes New Zealand opportunities
Just a week after Air New Zealand announced it would not recommence twice-weekly flights from Christchurch to Los Angeles, a service first suspended in April, Dubai-based airline Emirates is eyeing those gaps left by Air New Zealand in Asia and promises growth for future services.
Emirates had recorded growth in revenue, freight and passengers from its 28 services or 56 flights in and out of New Zealand, Emirates spokesman Richard Vaughan said.
Those flights include 14 in and out of Christchurch each week.
“Tourism is growing from the Middle East. We get good growth from Tourism New Zealand . . . and we’ve got a great relationship with New Zealand trade in Dubai too,” he said. ” . . . I see more business going into New Zealand.”
Emirates would examine opportunities on the Singapore-New Zealand route and continue to look at other openings in the long term, Mr Vaughan, senior vice-president for East Asia and Australasia commercial business, said.
Emirates would also look at opportunities to link with a New Zealand domestic operator, but “we wouldn’t take an investment in another business . . . it’s a bit difficult at the moment. The domestic is currently controlled by Qantas and Air New Zealand”, Mr Vaughan said.
