Everything from covered bridges to antiques
Anyone for history, covered bridges, hand-blown glass factories, wineries, rail-trails, fishing, golf, crafts, drive-in theaters and antiques?
All in the same area?
Kathleen A. Panek, the energetic owner of the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast, said all that is available around Shinnston, West Virginia.
“The Gillum House is too small for group tours because we only have three guest rooms, but there are a lot of hotels in the area,” she said
She is urging more agents and tour operators to consider this area of north central West Virginia.
“We’re a tourist destination but a lot of people don’t realize it,” she said.
To cite one example of what there is to do there: 9 of the 17 state’s remaining covered bridges are within 60 miles or less of Shinnston.
In addition, the area has one of the few Chapels of Perpetual Adoration to be found anywhere.
“It’s Catholic and ‘Perpetual’ means someone has to be in the chapel 24 hours a day. Since we only have about 2400 people, that means Baptists and Lutherans and other religions have to participate,” said Ms Panek.
Perhaps the best time to visit is October, when the leaves change. Ms Panek said West Virginia’s fall season is among the most beautiful in the world.
