Expedia unpacks 2024 travel trends
Expedia has outlined what will be hot in 2024.
It released Unpack ’24, a snapshot of likely 2024 travel trends based on customer purchasing data and a global survey of 20,000 travellers.
Jon Gieselman, president of Expedia Brands, said: “These insights empower our travellers to be early adopters booking highly sought-after trips before they become mainstream.”
The 2024 Set-jetting Forecast sees travellers continue to tap inspiration from TV and movie dramas.
Over half said they have researched or booked a trip after watching the destination featured in a TV show or movie.
For example, Expedia says its search data saw a 150% spike in travel searches for Romania following the release of “Wednesday” on Netflix.
There was a 200% increase in searches for Paris after the last season of “Emily in Paris.”
It finds TV shows and streaming services top TikTok for influencing destination choices for Singaporeans.
Some of the findings include:
Romania inspired by Wednesday season 2
Paris inspired by Emily in Paris season 4
South Korea inspired by Squid Game season 2
Thailand inspired by The White Lotus season 3
Malta inspired by the new Gladiator 2 film
Scottish Highlands inspired by the remaining seasons of Outlander
London, Bath and Windsor, UK inspired by the new season of Bridgerton and The Crown season 6.
Expedia finds top 2024 destinations are nearby alternatives to popular big cities.
These are often more affordable options but with a similar vibe.
For example, the smart traveler is heading to Taipei instead of Seoul, Curaçao instead of St. Martin and Memphis as an alternative to Nashville.
Expedia predicts concert tour tourism will continue to flourish in 2024.
Almost 70% say they are more likely to travel to a concert in another city as an excuse to visit a new place.
Also, Expedia predicts AI tools will play a bigger role in trip planning next year.
In 2023, only 6% of travellers used it to plan their trip.
Nearly 40% of travellers say they would use AI tech to find a place to stay and 35% would use it plan activities.
