Exploring Houston’s cultural diversity

Tuesday, 28 May, 2024 0

Houston, the fourth largest city in the US, has an eclectic arts and culture scene expanding beyond the Theatre and Museum Districts.

Visitors to H-Town can unlock a variety of cultural experiences from food, entertainment and the artistic endeavors of its diverse communities.

Discover the New Houston Signature Experiences: Five unique experiences that speak of Houston’s cultural diversity.

In addition to the existing Experience Houston Marketplace, the popular platform with offerings that include attractions, guided tours and even multi-day passes for museums and local breweries, the new Houston Signature Experiences provide visitors with five carefully curated immersive experiences.

To celebrate Houston’s cultural diversity, the new experiences are provided by Black-owned small businesses. These stories behind the Houston Signature Experiences invite you to listen and learn from each one.

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church: “From Chains To The Church

Embark on a historical journey at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. This hallowed downtown ground was established just two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and six months following the liberation of Texas slaves.

The Heritage Society: “From Plantation To Emancipation”

The 1847 Kellum-Noble House, the 1866 Fourth Ward Cottage, and the 1870 Yates House—each one a UNESCO-designated Site of Memory for their ‘Slave Route Project’—stand as pillars of remembrance. As you wander through these homes you are transported to a different era, where each room tells a story of endurance.

Houston This Is It Soul Food: “40 Weight Gravy: A Soulful History of Soul Food”

Immerse in Houston’s authentic culinary landscape at “Houston This Is It Soul Food,” where each recipe is a chapter of history served on a plate. Since 1959, this restaurant has been a gastronomic anchor in the community.

Lucy Pearls: “Southern Sweets & Soulful Stories”

A one-of-a-kind dessert experience that blends the flavors of history and life lessons, with the stories behind some of the region’s favorite classic southern desserts.

Pur Noire Urban Wineries: “Pur Pairings That Speak To The Soul”

Indulge in a 90-minute journey of taste, as Houston’s premier black-owned winery rolls out an experience that is both a lesson in the art of winemaking and a celebration of culinary artistry. This is where the heritage of soul food meets refined award-winning wines.
