FAA fines Iowa airport for safety lapses

The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a $145,000 civil penalty for an Iowa airport, citing multiple safety failings.
The city-owned Sioux Gateway Airport responded by ensuring ‘inspection deficiencies’ are being addressed.
The FAA made three separate inspections since May 2018 and logged several alleged violations each time.
According to the agency, the airport repeatedly failed to maintain surfaces to a sufficient standard, runway and taxiway markings were not maintained and not clearly visible, and visual wind direction indicators were not clearly visible.
It said the failings created potentially hazardous foreign object debris.
The airport responded to the allegations with a statement, ensuring travelers it remains safe.
"We are working to resolve the safety related inspection deficiencies and are working on a corrective action plan to eliminate any issues in the future. Sioux Gateway Airport wants to assure the traveling public that it is a safe environment. We are committed to safety and working through the process with the Federal Aviation Administration to resolve all issues."
Sioux Gateway, which has the unfortunate airport code of SUX, is served by American Airlines regional services to Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth.
