Fatal crashes in South Africa as World Cup begins
Three British students have died following a tourist coach crash in South Africa.
Three teenagers were killed and four others are in intensive care after their safari bus veered off a mountain road near Nelspruit in the north-eastern Mpumalanga Province.
Two teachers and 18 students from a Leicestershire college were on the bus, along with a South African guide.
A police investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash.
In a separate incident, Nelson Mandela’s 13-year-old great-granddaughter, Zenani, was killed in a car crash on her way home from a Soweto World Cup concert last night.
The car she was travelling in overturned and the driver has been arrested and charged with drink-driving, according to reports.
Mandela has pulled out of attending the World Cup opening ceremony in Johannesburg today.
The tragic accidents have cast a shadow over the start of the World Cup and have highlighted road safety concerns in the country.
Around 25,000 England fans are estimated to be travelling to South Africa for the tournament.
