Fear of flying keeps some grounded

Wednesday, 22 March 20063 min read

How many Americans these days still fear flying?

About 27% of adults are fearful of getting on an airplane tomorrow and another 9% are “very afraid,” according to a USA TODAY/CNN Gallup Poll.

The fear takes a toll.

“Besides its toll on employees, fear of flying is detrimental to employers,” wrote the newspapers. “Less-qualified employees may be hired for positions requiring air travel, and less-capable workers must be sent to out-of-town meetings and industry conferences.”

But flying fears seem to have subdued since 9-11. A pool taken before that event in 2001 showed at least 43% are at least somewhat fearful.

The American Management Association says a study showed 13% said fear of flying had affected their businesses.

Another study found that 60% of fearful flyers use sedatives or alcohol to reduce fears.
