Final nominations sought for British Travel Awards

Tuesday, 28 May, 2010 0

More than 35,000 nominations have been received for companies to be put forward to the next stage of the British Travel Awards.

The travel trade still has time to register deserving companies for consideration at www.britishtravelawards.com as nominations do not close until June 16 when the shortlist will be determined.

There are 100 consumer voted awards to choose from, spread across 12 categories, and ten travel trade-only awards.

BTAs chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton said: “Nominations have been coming in thick and fast but I would like to especially alert small operators to some new awards for 2010 – the Outbound Tour Operator categories which have been broken down into destinations, giving specialist operators a real chance to compete against the ‘Big Boys’.

“Also, given the popularity of the ‘staycation’, and our decision to increase the UK/Domestic Holiday categoriesto reflect the surge of interest in these types of holidays for 2010, these categories could do with a boost in nominations.

“There is a real opportunity for UK tourist boards, attractions, holiday parks and self catering companies to get their name in front of the consumers and be considered for an award.”

Consumer voting will commence on July 3 – last year almost 100,000consumer votes were cast electronically for the UK’s favourite travel companies in an awards process that ensures integrity and transparency as verified by Deloitte LLP.

The awards were publicised, and consumers encouraged to vote, through BTA media sponsors, which included the News International publications – The Times, Sunday Times, The Sun and News of the World – and also through the Global Radio Group stations such as LBC, Heart and Classic FM, plus bus poster campaigns with CBS Outdoor, RoughGuides, TripAdvisor and travel industry media partner, TravelMole.

This year the media sponsors are all back in place, as is last year’s headline sponsor Lloyds TSB Cardnet along with industry supporters including P&O Ferries, Avis, DoSomethingDifferent.com and Attraction Tickets Direct,  Thomas Cook, Viking River Cruises, TUI, GTA by TravelPort, World Travel Market, TTA Worldchoice, AITO, ITT and Training For Travel.

New sponsors for 2010 include Universal Studios, On The Beach Holidays, Airport Parking & Hotels, Debbee Dale Development and TravelCube.

Tickets for the British Travel Awards Gala Dinner, taking place on November 4 at Battersea Evolution in London, are already half sold out with ‘Early Birds’ taking advantage of the online booking facility that enabled them to choose their table according to desired proximity to the stage or industry colleagues.
