First Tune Hotel at LCCT Sepang

Wednesday, 21 Aug, 2007 0

KUALA LUMPUR – Tune Hotels.com, ASEAN’s first “no frills” hotel chain, will make history of sorts when it opens a property at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang, making it the first budget hotel housed in an international airport.

Scheduled to open next year the hotel will have 260 rooms on six floors, spread over more than 4,000sqm. The ground floor will house the lobby while the other floors will house the rooms and food and beverage outlets.

Tune Hotels.com deputy chief executive officer, Mark Lancaster, said the hotel would offer a five-star sleeping experience at one-star price for the 20 million-odd passengers who transit at the LCCT each year.

The hotel would also fulfil the needs as well as provide convenience for all low-cost carrier passengers, in line with the theme, “Now everyone can fly, now everyone can stay’”, he added. (Tune Hotels is linked to AirAsia as the latter’s chief executive officer Dato’ Tony Fernandes is also one of Tune Hotels’ co-founders.)

The first Tune Hotel opened last April in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city. Hotels currently under development in Malaysia and slated to open in the next few years are in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuching (Sarawak) and Kota Kinabalu (Sabah). All are slated for an early 2008 opening.

On the drawing board are 30 odd properties spread throughout the ASEAN region, in countries that include Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. Each hotel will have between 150 to 300 rooms and scheduled to open within the next three years.

Tune hotels’ rates from as low as RM9.90 (USD2.80) per night, if bookings are made in advance and at non-peak times. The average room rate is about RM59.90. The pricing, based on AirAsia’s model, is behind the group’s philosophy of providing very affordable hotel accommodation in strategic locations to both domestic and foreign travellers.
