Flights cancelled and delayed as bad weather hits Europe
Flights are being cancelled and delayed in the UK and across northern Europe due to severe weather.
Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen were all hit by delays and cancellations yesterday and said there would be further disruption today, while Stansted and Manchester airports are advising passengers to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.
British Airways and Lufthansa are warning of flight disruption, while KLM and KLM Cityhopper have cancelled a "significant number" of flights within Europe.
EasyJet said strong winds will continue to affect northern and north eastern Europe today.
"The weather situation in Copenhagen and Hamburg is still difficult following yesterday’s disruption and flights may still experience weather associated delays," it said.
According to reports, an Emirates flight from Dubai had to abort a landing at Birmingham Airport yesterday before being diverted to Gatwick, and an easyJet plane, diverted to Newcastle due to strong winds, was struck by lightning as it landed at the airport.
EasyJet said the Bristol to Edinburgh flight was "equipped to safely withstand lightning and at no point was the safety of the flight compromised".
The storm has caused chaos to rail and road transport across the UK and northern Europe and has claimed three lives. In Scotland, a lorry driver was killed when his vehicle was blown over while a man died when he was hit by a falling tree in Nottinghamshire. In Denmark, a woman died after a lorry turned over in high winds.
Flood alerts are in place across England and Wales and thousands are being evacated from their homes in Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. Around 120,000 have been left without power.
There were reports of 140mph winds in mountainous regions in Aberdeenshire and Inverness-shire yesterday and Scotland is now facing snow alerts.
