Florida cracks down on Disney ‘Don’t Say Gay’ dissent
Florida lawmakers passed a bill that would remove Walt Disney World’s special self-governing status.
It is the latest move to gag Walt Disney Co over its opposition to Florida’s controversial ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law.
Disney has held the special status for decades.
The change would be effective from June 2023.
It’s a bold move by Florida as Disney is one of the state’s largest employers with 60,000 workers.
The move could significantly increase its tax burden.
Last month Disney said it would stop all political donations.
Instead it is pledging $5 million to LGBTQ+ rights organizations.
“Disney and other woke corporations won’t get away with peddling their unchecked pressure campaigns any longer,” Florida Gov Ron DeSantis said.
Critics have called the bill clear retaliation against the company and warned local homeowners could be hit with big tax bills.
There have been calls by Disney fans on social media to pull out of Florida altogether.
