Hacking threat prompts Qantas to remove Frequent Flyer numbers from boarding passes

Tuesday, 15 Oct, 2019 0

Qantas will remove Frequent Flyer number identification from all boarding passes in a bid to cut instances of loyalty points hacking.

A few enterprising hackers have been successful in breaching customer accounts armed with just a passenger name and a Frequent Flyer membership number.

These are often picked up when travellers throw them away after a journey or the unnecessary practice of posting images of their ticket or boarding pass online.

In some cases hackers have been able to access customer accounts to make changes to an itinerary, siphon off Frequent Flyer points and even resell the ticket.

The boarding passes will still display the tier status allowing qualifying members to enter airport lounges.

Numbers have already been removed from digital boarding passes and will soon go from physical boarding passes issued at the airport.

"Frequent Flyer numbers can also be found within the Qantas App and on digital Qantas Frequent Flyer cards," an airline spokesperson said.
