Hawaii Tourism Authority rolls out responsible tourism campaign
Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Hawaii Visitors Convention Bureau have teamed up to share best practices for responsible travel within the islands.
A series of educational videos have been produced aimed at visitors to show the impacts of mass tourism and to give tourists a better understanding of the daily challenges.
It covers a range of issues from ocean conservation, cultural awareness, personal safety, waste management and more.
The ‘kuleana campaign’ videos were created highlighting some of the challenges facing Oahu, Maui County, Kauai, and Hawaii Island, and are fronted by local experts, such as conservationists, marine biologists, cultural advisors, and trail and water safety experts.
"Many travelers visiting the Hawaiian Islands don’t necessarily understand why we stay on the trail when we hike, why we care about protecting our reefs, and many of the dangers they need to be mindful of," said Jay Talwar, HVCB’s chief marketing officer.
"Rather than scold them, we felt that if our residents shared the ‘whys’ behind appropriate behavior then most visitors would follow along."
Key messages to tourists include being mindful of the impacts of plastic waste, swim and surf only when a lifeguard is on duty, and book only legal vacation rentals to avoid possible scams.
The videos are being screened on inbound flights operated by Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines, and are translated into Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
Some Hawaii hotels are also airing the videos, and visitors will also see them in their Facebook and Instagram feeds during their Hawaii vacation via geotagging tech.
The campaign has been funded by touirsm dollars raised through the Transient Accommodations Tax.
