Court decides economics must come before residents’ needs

Noise campaigners have lost their battle to get night flights banned from Heathrow airport after European judges decided they did not breach citizens’ rights.

As reported by News From Abroad, the campaign group Hacan-Clear Skies last year won a case in the European Court of Human Rights that mean night flights would be banned – but the Government appealed on the grounds that such a decision would severely damage an already-struggling aviation industry.

Yesterday the court overturned the decision after experts said night flights did not affect property prices – and that homeowners would easily be able to afford to move to another area. Newspaper commentators predict that the decision – which effectively means that the economic interests of the industry are more important than residents’ needs and wants – could lead to an increase in night flights in the UK and across Europe.

The earlier court ruling had already been applied to airports at Salzburg and Amsterdam; it now seems likely that the decision will be overturned at these two airports as well.
